An invitation to Mathieu moonshine

Speaker : Prof. Suresh Govindarajan, Dept. of Physics, IIT Madras

Abstract :

Moonshine refers to weird and unexpected connections between the sporadic finite simple groups and modular (automorphic) forms. Even more weird is that these objects appear in Physics. In this talk, we will discuss a connection between Mathieu's largest sporadic simple group, M_24, and modular forms, Jacobi forms and Siegel modular forms. This talk will be at an elementary level and no knowledge of modular forms will be assumed.
