I will try to define the object known as planar algebra and explain its connection with the theory of subfactors.
Prof. Vijay Kodiyalam is a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai. He holds a B.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT Madras, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Purdue University. His research interests include subfactor theory and planar algebras, free probability, quantum algebra, and commutative algebra.
