Program Overview

The B.S. in Mathematics is a four-year undergraduate programme designed to provide a rigorous foundation in mathematics while preparing students for the challenges of an increasingly computational and data-driven world. The curriculum emphasizes first-principles understanding across the core areas of algebra, analysis, topology and geometry, complemented by comprehensive training in probability and statistics. Through mathematical computing, laboratory courses, simulations and project-based learning, students develop both theoretical depth and practical problem-solving skills. The programme equips graduates for higher studies, research, and careers in mathematics, statistics, data science, quantitative finance, artificial intelligence, and other quantitative disciplines.
The curriculum offers substantial flexibility beyond the core courses. Students may choose from a wide range of departmental electives in pure and applied mathematics, electives offered by other departments, and free electives across IIT Madras. The free electives provide opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary interests and, where applicable, satisfy the requirements for a minor in another discipline. Students may also undertake an undergraduate thesis, enabling early exposure to mathematical research.
