Studying rational points on varieties over non-algebraically closed fields is a central theme in arithmetic geometry. The Brauer group and the Brauer--Manin obstruction play important role in this study, particularly for varieties over global fields. In this talk, I will discuss some of the fundamental ideas and questions in this area, and then describe recent joint work with Amalendu Krishna.
