Abstract :

We will briefly review the previous relevant talks mainly consisting of the Newton-Puiseux theorem, Newton polygons and Newton's method to solve equations in one variable, and complete unfinished discussions, including why Newton's method works and its historical context. Time permitting, we will discuss what happens in finite characteristic and/or if one increases the number of variables.
